A Summer Movie I Didn’t Know I Needed
Summer show this, summer movie that—Materialists might just be the summer movie I didn’t know I needed. I’ve been hooked since the teaser trailer, and now that the official one has dropped, it is dripping in classic A24 elegance. It’s exactly the kind of chaotic rom-com that’s perfect for a late-night watch.
Celine Song Does It Again
Written and directed by the iconic Past Lives filmmaker Celine Song, this is not just some rom-com fluff. It’s giving literally all I need: high-stakes relationships and a modern love triangle that is messy in the most intentional way ever.
Usually, I’m against love triangles (lowkey my most disliked trope), but when Pedro Pascal is one love interest and Chris Evans is the other, suddenly I love—no, live for—love triangles.
Meet Lucy: The Morally Grey Matchmaker
Dakota Johnson plays Lucy, a high-end matchmaker in NYC who seems like she could ruin your life and upgrade your relationship status in one afternoon. From what we see, she’s quite the character—smart, ambitious, and not here to apologize for any of it. Morally grey queen rise, please.
I honestly love her character already. She’s like a perfect storm—polished yet vulnerable, craving connection in all the right ways. Like many of us, she just wants to be appreciated and loved. She reminds me of those characters you root for, but still scream at the screen, “Girl, what are you doing? Don’t knock on his door!”
Pedro vs. Chris = Peak Love Triangle
Now, onto the reason I suddenly stan love triangles. This is peak male love interest summer.
Pedro Pascal plays Harry Castillo and—shocker—he’s giving rich, hot (as usual), and electric. Then there’s Chris Evans as John, who seems to be the one who let Lucy become “the one that got away.”
From the trailer, the dynamic between the three feels electric and slightly dangerous in the best summer movie way. For my girl Lucy, this doesn’t seem to be about choosing the “right” guy—it’s about figuring out what she actually wants.
Personally, me… can I have both?
A24 + Celine Song = A Visual Feast
A24 never misses. Like, ever. Visually, the film looks stunning. Celine Song’s fingerprints are all over it in the most chic and intentional way—it’s intimate, classy, and romantic without being cliché.
Final Thoughts
Basically: Materialists looks like it’s not going to hold your hand, and I am so here for it.
If you haven’t seen the trailer yet… fix that immediately:
