Episode Review: The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3, Episode 1- “Last Season”

Conrad and Belly Are Coming Home to Us, Guys

I cannot begin to even fathom my love for these first two episodes. I mean, I had to sit through Jeremiah and Belly, but anything for Conrad and Belly.

This first episode was all I could have ever imagined. Straight out of the book and perfect—it was like reading the book except I was watching it happen.

All I have to say is: Jeremiah, I declare you #1 Manchild. I was in disbelief at how much coddling Belly had to do for her grown boyfriend. I liked how they showed us who Jeremiah really is and the tiny little things that led up to her decision—as if the cheating wasn’t enough. Okay, technically he didn’t cheat, but you were “broken up” for all of two seconds and you’re already with someone? Yeah, no. I rest my case. A Bonrad girlie forever.

Jeremiah had me wanting to go through my screen and shake some sense into him, because literally what? I have a very, very tiny soft spot for Jere and Belly because, well, they can be cute when they want to—but Jeremiah is slowly killing that.

“Losing Me” by Taylor Swift during the scene where Belly finds out about Lacie was perfect. Obviously, like a lot of people, I imagined Lacie would have been used—because, well, you get the idea. Losing Me was the perfect choice and I loved it. Jenny Han is bleeding genius this season. The little crossover easter eggs between her other projects? I gasped. And I mean full-on gasped when I saw Jeremiah and Belly dressed as Peter and Lara on Belly’s wall. I was like, pause—is that who I think it is?! I wish it was Belly and Conrad, but whatever.

Also… not only are we ruining relationships between siblings, but now everyone’s a cheater? I was like “Oh Taylor and Steven, cute!” Come to find out they’re cheaters. I was like nooo, let’s not push the cheater trope—I beg of you. I know there has been some talk online about how Taylor and Steven’s looks have changed this season, but guys—it has been two years. Their looks are going to change and you know what? I am here for it. They look perfect. I’ve been a Steven and Taylor fan since season one, and I am so glad we are seeing more of them this season—I am eating it up.

It’s nice and refreshing to see this new side to Belly. Even though this new side is because of Jeremiah, it still means a lot to her growth. I feel like she’s grown as a person and still has growing to do—obviously. I hope this abroad trip does her some justice. If you know, you know. I’m so glad that storyline is still happening. I have this pit in my stomach that’s making me think Jenny Han is going to change the ending—and I will riot. Like, no. It’s book canon.

Now let’s talk about the moment I was dearly excited for: my man Conrad Fisher popping up on my screen. His entrance song? Perfect. He is grown. And for everyone who said he needs therapy—he is in therapy!! Not only is this man a doctor in the making, a QB for Stanford, but he’s going to therapy? I know that’s right. He’s untouchable, Jeremiah—I’m sorry. I’m so glad he’s going to someone to talk about things, but it makes me a bit sad because it seems like he’s isolating himself and sacrificing his happiness for Jeremiah and Belly. I don’t care what anyone says—that is selfless. This man sat through Fourth of July and put his feelings aside for them. And mind you, Jeremiah was upset over a handhold at Thanksgiving. It is telling, guys.

The soundtrack was to die for. I feel like it’s a bit of a change from previous seasons—it feels more mature for some reason. I just know the song choices for the rest of the season are going to be top tier. I actually really enjoyed this episode. It was the perfect entrance to our heartbreaking season three. We will always have summer, guys.
