Regretting You Movie Trailer: A Surprising Turn for Colleen Hoover Fans

After watching the Regretting You trailer, I will be picking up the book and reading.
Given the fact I have read It Ends With Us and didn’t quite love the movie, I felt like I needed to brace myself for this one, but it was quite the warming wake-up, and I was pleasantly surprised.

First Impressions: Bracing for the Worst and the Best?

I feel like I have seen so much promotion for this movie and I have loved it. Given that my girl McKenna Grace is in the film, I was already dipping my toes in and intrigued. After all the chaos surrounding Colleen Hoover’s previous film—and yes, you know the chaos I’m talking about—I did not expect much from this trailer. I felt like, for once when watching, I was going off my own personal reaction and not taking a dive into the comments and letting that control how I was feeling about a Colleen Hoover film.

Now, I didn’t love It Ends With Us, but I did not hate it. I felt like there were good parts, and there were a lot of not-so-good parts. But now that it has been nearly a year since the release, I feel refreshed and ready to take on a new one. I definitely felt something watching this trailer, and I am very, very excited to watch it this October 24th—my calendar is filled that day.

I have not read the novel, and I’m definitely wanting to after seeing the trailer, but I have heard great things about it. So I can’t quite say too much on if it is taking a different route (which most book-to-screen adaptations do), but I haven’t seen too much hate on the trailer.

The Cast Carries (and I’ll Be Watching for Them)

Now Dave Franco, McKenna Grace, Mason Thames, Willa Fitzgerald, Allison Williams, and Scott Eastwood? Count me in. If you’re a long-life fan of Scream, you know who Willa Fitzgerald is. And if you’re a Nicholas Sparks fan, you’ll know who Scott Eastwood is. I feel like every actor is very well-known, and so that being said—we know what to expect with acting. And trust me, it will be good. Round of applause for Mason and McKenna’s promo for this film, pulled me in even more.

I feel like the trailer fully indulges in that “curl up in a blanket, grab some tissues, and prepare yourself” moment. There is the common tragic accident and a lot of tension in the in-betweenness of it all. It seems really heavy, and I do cry at everything, so I can imagine I will be sobbing through this.

Now, it being directed by the one and only Josh Boone, I can feel as if this will be a good one—a great one even—and I have not even seen the film yet. That is a lot coming from me, okay?

Final Thoughts: Cautiously Hopeful

Now, I have read a few of Colleen Hoover’s novels and I have had good thoughts on them. Her characters are constantly polarizing and layered, and the tropes she leans on always drag me in for more. Some of her plots, I’ll say, have gotten some stares and judgments from me—but I am beyond excited for this film. Emotional depth and romance with grounded measures is all I could possibly need, and Regretting You is expressing just that.

I am still hesitant, given a lot of book-to-screen adaptations can be disappointing—and from what I have seen of Colleen’s films, I have been. But with the actors and the feelings I have gotten from the trailer so far, I expect things to go well. Maybe Regretting You will be the adaptation that sticks the landing in the Hoover universe.

Emotional storytelling is like giving candy to a baby—and I am the baby.

I’m not getting my hopes up, but I am hopeful and will be watching, cautiously—with tissues on standby.

Here’s the trailer if you haven’t seen it already:
